Life changes, even when we're not ready

Aging is not one single event. It's a long series of small awakenings.

One day, the hay bale feels heavier. The fence line seems longer than it used to be. Getting in and out of the saddle may take more effort. Cold weather settles deeper into my bones. A task that used to take an hour now takes the whole afternoon.

Those realities can be hard to accept. They can bring frustration, sadness, and even a touch of fear. It's not easy feeling your world shift beneath your feet. It's not easy dealing with a body that requires for more care than it once did.

But, aging brings a kind of clarity. I find myself less tolerant of being rushed to get things done. Less willing to spend energy on things that drain me. Less patient with people who don't pull their own weight. More drawn to what's real, to quiet time, and lasting friendships.

The older I get, the more I notice the little things:

  • The soft nicker of a horse as I approach the barn

  • The smell of fresh cut hay

  • The way the shadows play across the pasture as the sun dips towards evening

  • The flash of a blue bird on the rusted fence row behind the house

These moments do not erase the challenges of aging. They give me a place to rest inside them.
