I frequently see letters that indicate someone is bamboozled or distressed by the state of things in the world...OMG! WTF? We all know what these letters stand for.

WTHN? These letters come to mind when I question things in our society and the answers turn out to be befuddling, bewildering and baffling. Or, there is simply no answer at all. Sometimes, the most suitable answer is WTHN or "Why the Hell Not" and the events that bring those letters to mind are becoming more and more common every day.

What leaves me scratching my head?

In most of the ads we see on television about "all natural" treatments for everything from baldness and wrinkles to obesity and constipation, there is a lot of miniscule print at the end that says no tests have been performed to indicate the product actually does what it says. Don't they have to be tested to be sure they are safe? WTHN, when society spends millions of dollars on these products and their promises.

Broadcasters play the ads repeatedly, and make no announcements concerning the integrity of the product or accuracy of the ads. Isn't the source of the information be held accountable for the integrity of what they promote? WTHN when many people, especially the elderly, are so easily duped or misled.

Articles appear on FB, in newspapers, on television broadcasts, etc. yet, the stories often leave out details or tell only one version of an event. There are never consequences as to whether or not the truth is being told or specific details have been omitted. Isn't there a law against lying to the public? WTHN, when inaccuracies can lead to bias and division in society.

Diabetes is often prevalent in high poverty neighborhoods where the closest food source is a gas station or convenience store whose sole offerings include soft drinks, beer, snack crackers and chips with a few honey buns or doughnuts within reach at the check-out. There is almost never a grocery store or farmers' market within walking distance of high poverty neighborhoods. Wouldn't it be more cost effective to provide people with wholesome food instead of giving them money when the only thing they can buy is junk food? WTHN, when healthy eating is a big step towards overall good health.

There are plenty more examples of WTHN moments in our world that I hope to share in future posts. Feel free to share your own thoughts on WTHN!

My "Motto"

When I first dedicated myself to finishing what my great-grandfather started four generations before, someone suggested I use a "motto"...
